THE THRILL OF LOVE

Directed by Susie Bundy

‘The Thrill of Love’ Amanda Whittington’s gripping new play – dramatises the true story of Ruth Ellis and takes a fresh look at the woman behind the headlines.
The facts are not in dispute. On 11 April 1955, Ruth Ellis shot and murdered her lover, David Blakely, outside a Hampstead pub.
Ellis was found guilty and became the last woman to be hanged in Britain.
But why was she so keen to admit her guilt, and so loath to offer any defense, even refusing to name – until too late – the person who gave her the loaded gun?
This play has a feel of a 1950’s black & white movie – is very stylised and choreographed and although Ruth Ellis was remembered as the last woman to be hanged in this country, it is much more about her life.
A divorcee with a young child to care for – she meets the wealthy womanising, David, a racing driver with whom she becomes obsessed.
Fame comes – but not in the way she imagined.
Why does their relationship end in murder?
Why does she plead not guilty – but offer no defence?
Why does she show no remorse? And who is she trying to protect?
